The Montenegrin Institute of Metrology is collaborating with the Croatian Association of Crystallographers to conduct the competition “The beauty of crystals”, modeled on the competition “The beauty of crystal surfaces”, which has already been held twice in Croatia.
The competition consists of creating the largest and most well-formed single crystal of the specified compound within a limited time period and is intended for 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-year elementary school students and high school students in Montenegro.
The goal of the competition is to bring the students closer to the fascinating world of crystals and their growth, to familiarise them with some crystallization methods, and to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge of chemistry. Through this project, the students will learn the basic procedures of laboratory work and the scientific research methodology.
17 schools, with 51 applied teams in total, will participate in this competition. Schools in Podgorica, Nikšić, Ulcinj, Kotor, Beran, Plav, Pljevalj, Bar, and Žabljak have applied. Of all the applicants, 10 are high schools, comprising 31 teams. The competition started on December 19th, 2018, and finished on April 20th, 2019.
