The fourth edition of the Hot Topics in Contemporary Crystallography – HTCC4 was held in the conference center of the Astarea Hotel in the picturesque fishermen village of Mlini, at less than 10 km from the Dubrovnik old town from Oct. 1st to 6th, 2019. The workshop was extremely well attended, as we assembled 58 participants from 17 countries and 3 continents.

It was supported by seven commercial partners, among which were our golden sponsors BRUKER and JEOL. It was also generously supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, IUCr, European Crystallographic Association and Croatian academy of science and arts.

This year hot topics were:

  1. Structure determination using X-ray FELs (by. prof. Henry Chapman, dr. sc. Saša Bajt and dr. sc. Thomas White, Center for Free-Electron Laser Science DESY, Universität Hamburg,)
  2.  Cryo-electron microscopy ( by. prof. Jürgen Plitzko, Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Department of Molecular Structural Biology, Germany and prof. Carrie Bernecky, Institute of Science and Technology Austria)
  3. Protein structure determination by NMR (by. prof. Oliver Zerbe, University of Zürich, Department of Chemistry, Switzerland)
  4.  Biomolecular simulation (by. prof. Franca FraternaliI, Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics, King’s College London
    United Kingdom and prof. Chris Oostenbrik, University of Natural Resources, and Life Sciences, Vienna, Institute of Molecular Modeling and Simulation, Austria)

Dr. sc. Zoran Štefanić (Ruđer Bošković Institute, Division of Physical Chemistry, Zagreb, Croatia) held off topic lecture named “Molecular visualization: scientific art and artistic science”.

 

CRYSTALS best poster award winner

Among the 18 eligible posters presented by participants at the HTCC4 the jury of the Croatian Association of Crystallographers has chosen the poster presented by Radoslaw Pluta (presenting author), Eric Aragón, Jorge Cordero, Pau Martin-Malpartida, Lidia Ruiz and Maria J. Macias titled „Structural basis for DNA recognition by FoxH1 pioneer transcription factor“ as the best in show. This decision was based on the quality, level and clarity of presented research.

Radoslaw Pluta has been awarded The prize consisting of a certificate and an opportunity to publish a paper in “Crystals” or in the joint Special Issue with HTCC4 free of charge.
